Illinois congressman John Anderson similarly heaped ridicule on Reagan throughout the Republican primaries. Anderson vowed to continue his opposition to the conservative takeover of the Republican Party, running as an independent presidential candidate. In contrast, Bush repudiated all his core economic and moral beliefs to run as Reaganâs vice president. Bush calculated that by serving Reagan he would be able to claim the presidential nomination in 1988. Conservatives calculated that after Bush held moderates to the Republican Party in 1980, they would then toss him off the ticket in 1984.
